The 10-80-10 Rule
The last 10% of our expansion project of the Mariposa Beach Resort put me to the test! Luckily, I am no stranger to hard work and being onsite for the last push was by design.
The way I handling multiple real estate projects and two education companies, all while traveling around the world is with the 10-80-10 rule. Here’s how it works…
- First 10% - You are heavily involved in the project. During this phase you establish the vision and share all needed resources with your team.
- Middle 80% - You leave the project to that trusted, capable, supported team.
- Last 10% - You come back to complete the project and fully realize the vision.
This is how 10-80-10 worked with the beach resort expansion project…
- First 10% - I was on the property to kick off the expansion and help establish the plan for adding 6 additional treehouses.
- Middle 80% - Our amazing contractor built the beautiful treehouses, while I traveled, visiting 10 countries.
- Last 10% - I came back to finish up the project with my DIY design skills. So fun!
This is exactly what is so great about reaching this point. Today, I have a choice. I get to decide what parts of a project I’m hands-on with. A great example happened when it was time to hang new signs over the ocean swing.
I could have asked my awesome maintenance team to hang the signs, but I wanted to do it. I wanted to complete that part of the project. I wanted to create the DIY content that is the core of my success.
So, I ended up sunburned and exhausted. And I actually said in a meeting, “I might need a day off”, which I pretty much never say. But it was my choice. I did it because I wanted to. Not because I had to.
When I was starting out and during the decade I spent renovating and renting single-family homes all by myself, I didn’t have a choice. I had to do all the work. Now, I know that with the right team, I can take on larger projects without taking on all the work!
With the right strategies, like 10-80-10, I continue to find ways to spend less time making more money. And more time doing what I want.
If you are ready for this type of freedom, I want you to know…
You don’t have to have millions in the bank to get started.
